We have significant expertise in international oil and gas practice, including advising oil and gas producers operating in Europe, Asia and South America on all aspects of petroleum extraction and production.

  •  Advising oil and gas producers on farm-in and farm-out agreements, production sharing contracts, exploration agreements, joint venture agreements, drilling and service contracts, and all related matters

  • Advising clients on regulatory regimes and trade matters, and environmental and Aboriginal matters
  • Advising energy-related companies on initial public offerings, Canadian and foreign stock exchange listings and financings

A sample of our extensive experience in the oil and gas industry includes:

  • Acting as counsel to numerous Alberta oil and gas service companies on TSX, TSXV, NASDAQ and AIM listings
  • Acting as counsel to a number of Alberta oil and gas producers on their activities in South America, including involvement in the bid process for production contracts and farm-in and farm-out agreements and the negotiation of joint venture agreements
  • Acting as counsel to INPEX Corporation in its purchase of shale gas properties in British Columbia
  • Acted on the development and implementation of the Syncrude project which currently supplies 15% of Canada’s petroleum requirements. Syncrude operates a large oil sand mine, utilities plant, bitumen extraction plant and upgrading facility that processes bitumen and produces value-added light, sweet crude oil for domestic consumption and export. In 2006 Syncrude produced 94.25 million barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend
  • Acted for lenders to the Hibernia off-shore oil project in Newfoundland
  • Acting as counsel to major Canadian crude oil and natural gas pipeline operators in all aspects of their business
  • Acting as counsel to participants in several proposed British Columbia liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities
  • Advising a number of oil and gas and industry participants in Canada on climate change and emissions trading matters
  • Acted for Northern Route Gas Pipeline Corporation, an aboriginal corporation, in connection with the proposed gas pipeline along the “over the top” route to transport gas from the North Slope of Alaska down the MacKenzie Valley to US markets (currently suspended)
  • Advising major B.C. and Yukon utilities on the sale of subsidiaries and assets
  • Acting as counsel to utilities on infrastructure upgrades and additions
  • Providing a major international oil company with environmental advice in British Columbia, including overseeing all aspects of decommissioning a major oil refinery
