Michael Styczen Comments on Alberta’s New Energy Legislation for Streamlining Project Approvals

Alberta has passed new energy legislation aimed at streamlining the approval process for oil and gas projects. The Responsible Energy Development Act will see project approvals handled by a single new regulator.

In an interview with Canadian Lawyer InHouse magazine, Davis LLP's Michael Styczen explains that while the notion of "one-stop shopping" is appealing to most industry professionals, the legislation has also attracted a fair amount of criticism, especially surrounding the issues of timeframes, appeals, and public interest.

"You wonder if the government tried to do too much – not just (create) a new regulator, but also try to deal with things like standing and getting rid of the idea of public interest and changing rules around appeals," he says.
