Davis LLP Clients Sign Historic Self-Governance Agreement

Publié: mardi, 8 novembre 2011

October 13, 2011 - Davis LLP's clients, the First Nations Health Council and First Nations Health Society, signed a landmark legal agreement with the federal and provincial governments that will ensure B.C. First Nations have a major role in the planning and management of health services for First Nations through a new First Nations health governance structure. The British Columbia Tripartite Framework Agreement on First Nation Health Governance paves the way for the federal government to transfer the planning, design, management and delivery of First Nations health programs to a new First Nations Health Authority over the next two years.

“This is a really important agreement for our clients and we were thrilled to have been part of it," says Elizabeth Mayer, lead lawyer on the agreement. “This is the first time an agreement like this has been signed and it will give the First Nations of British Columbia more control over their healthcare, which is an important piece of self governance.”

The First Nations Health Authority will incorporate First Nations’ cultural knowledge, beliefs, values and models of healing into the design and delivery of health programs that better meet the needs of First Nations communities.

The Davis LLP team members who helped bring this deal to fruition are Elizabeth Mayer, Sheila Tucker, Linda Parsons, Suzanne Kennedy and Angeline Nyce.
