Retired justice Dennis O'Connor announced on August 29, 2013 his withdrawal from Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair's internal police review into the shooting death of Sammy Yatim.
Some lawyers and community activists had previously voiced their opposition to Mr. O'Connor's involvement with the internal probe, citing concerns with conflict of interest due to his association with a law firm that has a long history of representing Toronto police in lawsuits. However, in an interview with the Toronto Star, Davis LLP's Gavin MacKenzie presents a different view: "Whether you consider the problem as a conflict of interest issue or a bias issue, in my view there is no reason for concern."
