Davis LLP Hosted Van Horne Institute Roundtables on Canada's Transportation Policies

In February 2013, Davis LLP – in partnership with the Van Horne Institute and the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy – hosted a series of Roundtables across Canada, which focused on shaping Canada’s transportation policies for the 21st century.

The Roundtable, based on Brian Flemming’s June 2012 "White Paper on Reforming Canada's Transportation Policies in the 21st Century," was designed to be the first step in the development of a framework for transportation policy in Canada. Stakeholders had the opportunity to express their views and discuss infrastructure funding and other topics on transportation policy, in order to help the Canadian government shape its decennial review of national transportation policies in 2014.

"Transportation and transportation infrastructure are critical to the economic growth and prosperity of Canada," said Catherine Pawluch, a partner in Davis LLP's Transportation Law Group. "It’s a privilege for Davis to be part of this policy dialogue. Our extensive work with clients in every facet of the transportation sector makes the firm well-positioned to contribute to this important discussion on Canada’s future transportation policy.”

The Roundtables coincided with the commercial and financial close of a landmark transportation infrastructure project, the Confederation Line Project, which is the City of Ottawa’s first light rail transit system. Davis LLP advised the Rideau Transit Group Partnership on this $2.1 billion project, which is expected to provide significant economic and environmental benefits to the nation’s capital.

Davis LLP hosted the Van Horne Institute's invitation-only Roundtables in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. The events formed part of a national series attended by transportation policymakers in six Canadian cities that also included Halifax, Montreal, and Winnipeg.

Catherine Pawluch facilitated the session in Toronto, while Laura Safran, Q.C. and Dale Sanderson, Q.C. chaired the roundtables in Calgary and Vancouver respectively.
