Rob Seidel, Firm Managing Partner, and Jennifer Cleall, Partner, of Davis' Edmonton office, acted for Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions, negotiating the $4.5-million funding agreements to Livestock Gentec and Phytola over two years. The research conducted by these two University of Alberta research centres could boost food production by increasing oil crushed from canola, or breeding livestock for better milk or meat.
Phytola researchers are developing ways to increase the quantity of oil in oilseed plants such as canola and flax. It is also researching approaches to improve the quality of the oil for nutraceutical and industrial applications such as health supplements, livestock feed and aquafeed. Livestock Gentec researches genome analysis to better identify the genetics that enable breeders to produce more efficient cattle, swine and other livestock.
Alberta Innovates - Bio Solutions is a provincial government agency which funds research and development in bio resources.
