Safran, Q.C., and Catherine A. Pawluch, have joined the firm as partners. Based in Calgary, Laura specializes in aviation, corporate/commercial, intellectual property and technology law. She acts for national and international corporations, major institutions and government entities in respect of a wide variety of commercial and corporate transactions. With particular expertise in aviation law, she represents numerous aviation-industry clients, including air carriers, leasing companies, charterers, international aviation associations, aviation underwriters, manufacturers and aircraft financiers on a variety of aviation law matters. Previously, Laura held the position of Vice-President, Law and Corporate Secretary of Canadian Airlines International. Recently, she completed the update to the Canadian Encyclopedia Digest (4th ed.) on Aviation (Carswell) , the first update since 1998. She is consistently noted as a leading lawyer by all of the noteworthy legal directories, particularly in the field of aviation law. She has also been named one of Canada's Most Powerful Women (2004) in the Globe & Mail, as well as one of the Leading Women Lawyers in Canada (2009) by Lexpert. Based in Toronto, Catherine has more than 25 years of experience advising clients in the context of mergers and acquisitions, on regulatory approvals required under Canada's competition (anti-trust), foreign investment and transport laws. She counsels foreign clients, including Chinese enterprises, as well as domestic companies on regulatory approvals and compliance issues, including Canada-U.S. border security, export controls, customs and licensing requirements. Catherine holds the prestigious designation as the only Canadian to have served as president of the U.S.-based Transportation Lawyers Association, and the only person to have held the position of president in both the American and Canadian Transport Lawyers' Associations.
