Biography

Michael Coburn practises tax law in the Vancouver office of Davis LLP. Prior to joining Davis in 2003, Mr. Coburn practiced at the Vancouver office of another national firm.

The following are among the recent and current engagements, he has advised on:

  • The structuring of the acquisition of significant interest in a publicly-listed Canadian resource company by Japanese investors
  • The tax deferred "split-up" of a public company into three separate public companies
  • The acquisition of a franchise in the Western Hockey League, one of the major junior hockey leagues in North America
  • The acquisition of timber manufacturing facility by a non-resident forestry company
  • The offshore acquisition of South American mining assets by a Canadian public company

In addition to advising on transactions, Mr. Coburn also provides tax advice on a wide variety of topics, including:

  • The application of Canadian withholding tax to non-resident individuals and corporations
  • Ensuring that private company securities qualify as eligible investment for Registered Retirement Savings Plans
