Biography

Dr. Euan Taylor is a Registered Patent Agent and Trade-mark Agent and an experienced Arbitrator. He is the head of Davis LLP's Patent Practice Group and an active member of the firm's China & Southeast Asia Practice Group. Whilst emphasizing patent rights, particularly those related to biotechnical and chemical subject matters, Dr. Taylor's practice embraces all aspects of intellectual property including: registration and prosecution of rights, transfers of ownership, licensing of rights, due diligence investigations for commercial transactions and the arbitration of disputes. He is responsible for a wide range of patent applications, including filings on behalf of local and Asian biotech companies and educational institutions. He has given advice on the patent and IP dimensions of a number of major sale and licensing transactions.

Dr. Taylor received his B.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1985, and his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1989 for studies of the molecular biology of animal development. After completing his Ph.D., he held postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of Manitoba. His broad education in the natural sciences and his research career have given him a wide knowledge of organic chemistry, cell and animal biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology in both plant and animal systems.

Dr. Taylor obtained his law degree from the University of British Columbia where he earned a number of academic awards. During his studies he spent a term at the Department of Law of Beijing University where he taught and attended classes. He speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese and has a range of experience in China-related legal matters.

In 2003-2004, Dr. Taylor worked in the life sciences practice group of a major national IP firm, drafting and prosecuting patent applications. After this, he served alternately as director of Intellectual Property and vice-president - IP for a publicly traded pharmaceuticals company based in Vancouver. He rejoined Davis LLP in June 2006 to lead Davis' patent practice.

Dr. Taylor's work has included the following:

  • Advising on IP aspects of the sale of a seed grower
  • Due diligence review and advising on IP reps and warranties in the sale of a patent portfolio for stem cell technologies for the treatment of heart disease
  • Advising on reps and warranties and co-development terms for trans-national cooperative development of technologies for the treatment of diabetes
  • Managing international patent and trade-mark portfolios
  • Developing IP policies and procedures
  • Advising on a range of IP-related issues including R&D strategies, filing strategies, ownership issues, and handling of strategic collaborations
  • Advising on, drafting and prosecuting applications for patents, trade-marks and industrial design registrations
  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications for subject matter including mechanical devices, chemical compounds, methods of treatment, chemical processes, nanoparticles, and a range of other biotechnical and chemical subject matter
  • Due diligence for the issue of shares in the sale of and investment in biotech and other technology companies
  • Assignments of patent rights, trade secrets, copyrights and trade-marks
  • Advising on patent infringement allegations
  • Assisting in a range of IP litigation including patent and trademark infringement actions
  • Review and analysis of Chinese court pleadings and patent ownership litigation
  • Negotiating the terms of a Chinese technology joint venture and advising on the associated licensing of technology
