Ali attended the University of Toronto where he obtained an honours Bachelor of Science degree in cognitive science in 1997, and a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1998. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 2006. While attending law school, Ali received the Cassels, Brock & Blackwell Prize in Civil Procedure, and the Goodmans LLP Scholarship.

Prior to entering the practice of law, he instructed a number of undergraduate-level philosophy courses at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and also worked as a research assistant in the Policy Branch of the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

Ali joined Davis in 2005 as a summer student and articled at the firm before returning as an associate following his admission to the Ontario Bar in 2007.
