Environmental Sustainability Task Force

At Davis LLP, we are making a difference by taking steps towards becoming more "green."
We have created a national Environmental Sustainability Task Force to address our environmental impact. The Task Force is currently implementing a number of initiatives regarding paper & electricity consumption, garbage & recycling programs, and travel & commuting alternatives.
We have already taken several positive steps, such as:
Water bottles
We have eliminated bottled water from our staffrooms and boardrooms, replacing them instead with filtered water, purified by reverse-osmosis.
Recycling
We have implemented recycling programs for batteries, paper, plastic & drink containers.
Paper
We have installed software programs to reduce our use of paper. For example, our fax-to-desktop software allows us to receive faxes by email rather than paper. Our electronic document management system allows us to store and catalogue faxes, e-mails, PDFs and other documents electronically. We are also in the process of installing several other software upgrades to further reduce our use of paper.
We have also replaced the printer/copier paper in our Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver offices with 30% recycled paper, we have converted all of our letterhead and follow sheets to 100% recycled paper, and we are exploring other options to increase our use of recycled paper.
Electricity
We converted the majority of our computer monitors to energy-efficient LCD flat screens, and we automatically power down our computers each night. The lighting in many of our offices is on timers or motion-sensors to further reduce our use of electricity.
Transportation
In our Vancouver Office, we participate in the Translink Pass Program to encourage lawyers and staff to take public transit.
Many of our lawyers and staff bike or walk to work, so we have provided or arranged for change rooms and shower facilities for lawyers and staff in many of our offices.
Also, as a tribute to our appreciation of the outdoors, for the past two years we have organized client bike trips where groups of Davis lawyers and clients spend an afternoon together, cycling approximately 50-60 kilometres each trip.
Commuter Challenge
In June 2009, Davis LLP's Vancouver office participated in the Metro Vancouver Commuter Challenge. During the week of the Challenge, 111 lawyers and staff commuted sustainably to work by walking, riding their bikes, taking public transit or carpooling. As a result, they burned 29221 calories and reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 3081.62 kilograms.
Office
Our Vancouver Office, Calgary Office, and Toronto Office buildings are all GO GREEN Certified with the Green Buildings Foundation.
Recent renovations in our Vancouver Office included disposal of used office furniture by distribution to personnel in the firm and by donation to charity to reduce waste.
Renewable Energy Group
Davis LLP is the first national firm to have a practice group dedicated solely to renewable energy & sustainable development.
The Davis Climate Change Law Group members have been counsel on various renewable energy projects across Canada during the early stage growth of the alternative energy industry. We have expertise in areas of renewable energy including wind energy, run of river hydro, biomass and fuel cell industries. The group also provides counsel to businesses whose daily activities have a strong environmental or social development aspect. For businesses whose goods and services are not primarily focused in these areas, we can provide counsel on integrating environmental and community based issues that arise in their business.
