Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for daily correspondence, document preparation, dicta-typing, drafting and filing court documents;
  • File preparation and management;
  • Utilize Litigation software (Summation and Case Map) to support files;
  • Book court dates, discoveries and communicate with registries;
  • Organize, assemble and draft chambers records, books of authorities, court pleadings and prepare agreements as required;
  • Conduct searches and carry out investigations through internet and other means;
  • Assist with organizing and managing lawyers’ practices;
  • Liaise with legal assistants, paralegals, other lawyers and clients on file progress;
  • General administrative duties including entering timesheets and coordinating billing cycle;
  • Other duties as required.

Knowledge, Qualities & Experience Required:

  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience as a Legal Administrative Assistant in Litigation;
  • Formal Legal Administrative Assistant education and training an asset;
  • Intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office 2010;
  • Strong technical aptitude, enjoy learning and utilizing new technology to create efficiencies;
  • Resourceful, strong problem solving skills;
  • Understanding and familiarity with various Litigation legal precedents and procedures including the Rules of Court;
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities required to prioritize a high volume of tasks or competing priorities;

  • Experience with Summation preferred;

  • Responsible for organizing, coordinating, scheduling variety of activities, keeping track of frequent updates and changes;
  • Coordinate tasks related to partner’s professional obligations;
  • Edit, format, print and revise letters, memos, reports, forms, from dictation or other instruction as required;
  • Drafting and filing court documents;
  • Prepare and manage files;
  • Book court dates, discoveries and communicate with registries;
  • Organize, assemble and draft chambers records, books of authorities, court pleadings and prepare agreements as required;
  • Process conflicts checks as needed;
  • Conduct searches and carry out investigations through internet and other means;
  • Liaise with legal assistants, paralegals, other lawyers and clients on file progress;
  • Provide administrative support including entering timesheets and co-ordinating the billing cycle;

Knowledge, Qualities & Experience Required

  • Minimum three to five years’ experience in Litigation (plaintiff personal injury experience preferred but not required);
  • Understanding and familiarity with various litigation legal precedents and procedures;
  • Formal Legal Assistant education and training an asset;
  • Diligent, takes initiative, able to manage tasks and deadlines independently;
  • Highly organized, proactive, excellent follow-up skills;
  • Able to provide strong, “right-hand” support to a busy practice;
  • Able to communicate professionally with clients and maintain empathy;
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office 2010, including contact and calendar management;
  • Accurate and detail-oriented, and possesses sound judgment;

Any- Practicum Placement - Legal Administrative Assistants

Several offices host Legal Administrative Assistant practicum placements throughout the year.  Our goal is to provide a valuable experience for the student as they begin to apply what they have studied in school.

If you are interested in a practicum placement, please submit your resume and include what dates you wish to complete your practicum.  We will be in touch if we are able to accommodate your placement.

We depend on our paraprofessionals for their strong expertise and trustworthy support. We recognize their credentials and present opportunities to further develop their skills and training so that they can perform even more challenging tasks, and heighten their roles and responsibilities. 

Our international clientele provides the opportunity to gain skills and experience doing work in multiple jurisdictions.  Our robust infrastructure of researchers, knowledge managers, word processors and office services staff, provides a team upon which our paraprofessionals can rely for assistance. All of our professional staff are encouraged to speak to their managers and Human Resources about how local associations, conferences and seminars may enhance their skills and their contributions to Davis LLP.

We also offer in-house technical training courses to all employees to ensure they keep their skills current within the comforts of Davis LLP's offices.
