U.S. gains new allies in 'no binding target' position at Bali
When Australia ratified the Kyoto Protocol this week the United States became the only industrialized country to have not ratified the protocol.
As the conference in Bali progress however, it appears the U.S. has gained the support of two other countries in its call for a post-Kyoto agreement without binding targets - Canada and Japan.
Japan has been actively pursuing emissions reductions, although it appears it may fall short of its Kyoto target. Still, with emissions close to 1990 levels, Japan is much closer to meeting its 6% reduction than Canada is.
It is unsurprising then that Japan and Canada have taken similar approaches, they both face a similar issue. However, given Canada's long standing record of leadership internationally, it is unfortunate that Canada is now seen as being obstructionist, or worse, that Canada will no longer be a major player because Canada has lost most of its credibility and clout.
What will come out of Bali remains to be seen. For a great site with daily highlights of the actual conference proceedings and reviews of some of the side events, I suggest visiting the International Institute for Sustainable Development's (IISD) web page covering the event, or the IISD Bali blog.
